“I kind of want this to be a clubhouse, a place people can hang out and make their ideas tangible,” said Leah Kroll, 25-year-old San Francisco native and co-owner of Williamsburg’s newest vintage clothing store, Old Made. Stopping herself short, Kroll flashed a sheepish smile as she skirted out from behind her desk, sauntering over to a belt rack to remove the plastic 6-pack package that had become tangled on one of the bars—the last of the evidence of the grand opening party, which featured a live music and an in-house gallery show. “I want our shop to be easy-going and approachable for the community.”
Nestled in the heart of Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Old Made is primarily a vintage boutique, offering a wide variety of accessories, jewelry and sweet summer dresses in a range of sizes. Though the men’s selection is slightly threadbare, Kroll and her business partner Frances Pezik are definitely looking to expand—and not just in terms of the clothes in their collection. The goal for the shop, Kroll explained, is to eventually achieve a “cross-genre community space.” Kroll and Pezik hope to use their space to host shows and concerts, in-house exhibitions and workshops, community meetings and fundraisers for worthy causes in an effort to create a multi-purpose neighborhood space.
“Having a vintage clothing store is sort of a back door to making a true community space,” Kroll said. “There are so many people in this community with great ideas, and it’s important to have the space to make them into a reality.”
