Everyone knows that newspapers, as a journalistic medium, are a dying breed. But lucky for us, Brooklyn’s got a million and one bloggers, and last Thursday night they crawled out from behind their computer monitors and gathered at Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO to schmooze, workshop ideas and finally put a face to a (screen) name.
Hosted by Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn’s Louise Crawford, the evening featured a panel discussion, aptly entitled, Why We Blog, boasting panelists from the Bed Stuy Banana, Gothamist, Sustainable Flatbush, Hip Slope Mama and Another Friggin Blog—interrupted every so often by video interludes. The fest was dedicated to the memory of Bob Guskind, the mastermind behind the well-loved BK blog, Gowanus Lounge who passed away in early March.
In addition to a bevy of bloggers, Thursday’s event was attended by CB1 District Manager Gerry Esposito—who is also a 34th district city council candidate—who was joined by his new campaign manager. Following the panel was a new program portion, Blogs of a Feather, which allowed like-minded bloggers to attend themed workshops and bounce ideas, tips and pieces of advice off one another.
“Blogging is the new version of sitting on your stoop, talking to your neighbors,” said one blogger, featured in a short video presentation. “The internet is like a window to the outside world.” But, for one night at least, the outside world was the outside world, and bloggers were able to find their place in it, face to face.
