Squirrels, sewing, and pop-up shops—what better way to kick off spring? This weekend, The Shiny Squirrel and Sew Moni will be hosting Homemade: Brooklyn, a three-day pop-up event at Kill Devil Hill at 170 Franklin Street in Brooklyn.
The event, which will run from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, March 14 from 11am-8pm, will feature products from local Brooklyn artists, designers, and chefs, as well as free DIY classes from 11am-12pm on Saturday and Sunday, hosted in partnership with Brooklyn Skillshare.
The event is curated by Brooklyn designer Moni Briones of Sew Moni and Jessica Goldfond, whose online art gallery and public relations firm, The Shiny Squirrel, promotes emerging Brooklyn artists and designers.
Goldfond and Briones, who believe the more major artist markets lack a local element, hope that the pop-up event will introduce Greenpointers and the rest of Brooklyn to talented artists, designers, and chefs from their own borough.
“I work with a lot of Brooklyn-based artists and designers and when you walk around to many of the stores around, you realize they’re not carrying a lot of the local people,” Goldfond said. “We thought we’d love to pay homage to people who are working in Brooklyn right now—people who make amazing things. We wanted to create a space where people can see what other people are doing in their own neighborhood. We’re constantly being told that Brooklyn is a really creative hub and I think that it’s great to showcase what’s really going on here.”
Goldfond and Briones started planning the store just two weeks ago.
“We’ve had such amazing support from everyone; people are really behind the project,” Goldfond said. “I think people are really hungry for this type of thing. They’re interested in what’s going on around them. Also, spring is happening—people want to get out and have fun.”
Several vendors from throughout the borough will be setting up shop at the event, including apparel designers Loyalty & Blood, a Williamsburg-based husband and wife duo comprised of David Denosowicz and Maggie Doyle, who will be selling their hand-craft jewelry and screen-printed totes and t-shirts; Sovereign & Beck, a colorful, quirky line of ties from Ryan Sovereign and William Beck; and Every Little Counts, a collection of eco-friendly printed tees and tanks.
Caja Jewelry will be presenting their hand-cut jewelry, made from recycled silver from Hoover and Strong, while Gold Teeth Brooklyn will be selling a variety of stationary. Greenpoint’s own Old Hollywood Brooklyn, a vintage boutique store on Meserole avenue, will be presenting a variety of their vintage wares, while designer and crafter Alyssa Zygmunt of Brooklyn Rehab will be bringing her unique blend of design and found objects to the store, and photographer Kait Saaf will be selling her pinhole portraits of Brooklyn.
Hungry shoppers will be able to munch on Rescue Chocolate, handcrafted vegan chocolate bars whose proceeds go to animal rescue, as well as BAM’s homemade beef jerky, usually available exclusively at Toby’s Public House.
Finally, Moni Briones of Sew Moni, one half of the curating duo for Homemade: Brooklyn, will be bringing her line of handbags and accessories, as well as instructing workshops in sewing and DIY kite making over the weekend.
Stop in at Kill Devil Hill all weekend, and join the whole gang on Friday at 6pm for the opening party, featuring free food and drinks.
“We hope we’ll be able to do more of this concept in different parts of Brooklyn,” Goldfond said. “But the Kill Devil Hill space is especially beautiful, and Greenpoint is such a great neighborhood. We thought this would be the perfect location. We really hope that people come out and support it, and that local businesses in Greenpoint come out. Maybe they’ll find someone that they’ll want to carry in their store.”
