Newest Greenpoint Y Scholar Graduates Ready to Take on the Real World

The Greenpoint YMCA ushered on another batch of college ready students as part of their Greenpoint Y Scholars program at a graduation ceremony held at Princess Manor on Nassau Avenue, last week.

Y Scholars is a college preparation program that caters to teenagers in the neighborhood, helping to improve their chances of getting into competitive schools and colleges. Some of the training they receive includes case management, mentoring and coaching, self-esteem building, developing social skills, effective problem solving and conflict resolution and teamwork.

75 students participated in the program this year, which is conducted at the Williamsburg Preparatory High School. Over 95 percent of the Y Scholars class this year has been accepted into a college program, according to the YMCA.

The highest honor dedicated to students participating in the program, the Executive Director Award, was presented to Tatyana Spence, a senior at Williamsburg Prep High School, who will attend SUNY Plattsburg in the fall.

“You will be afraid but don’t let that stop you,” said La-Asia Hundley, a Greenpoint Y board member and the keynote speaker for the evening, to the students present at the ceremony. “Use that energy to push toward your dreams and pursue the best that you can be.”

Local electeds, including Councilmember Steve Levin came on to cheer the new graduates as well.

“Embrace all opportunities, try as many things as possible,” he said. “You never know where those paths may lead you.”
