District 14 Parents Honored for School Contributions

Dozens of parents gathered at the Juan Morel Campos Secondary School on Heyward Street Thursday night to be acknowledged by School District 14 and its Community Education Council for their work on behalf of our schools.

More than two dozen parents received awards for the leadership and volunteer roles they played over the course of the current academic year that comes to a close next week.

Alicja Winnicki, the superintendent for the district, commended the parents for their involvement and stressed the importance of parental presence in improving schools’ performances.

Tesa Wilson, the president of the Community Education Council made a special commendation to the fathers. She invited them to the front of the room and stressed the importance of a fathers’ role in a child’s school life.

In addition, the parents who were recognized Thursday night also received congressional certificates of recognition on behalf of Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez.

“22 years ago when I started in office this district was considered, academically a disaster, today I’m so proud to see how we’ve come together with team work and I’m so proud to see that we want to build on an American that lasts,” said Velazquez.

Just some of the projects that parents worked on last year included the creation of parents chat groups that meet monthly to discuss issues facing parents, hosting soirees to raise money for underprivileged kids to attend prom, and a book swap, among several other events.

“In order to have great school parents really have to be involved in the process,” said Kate Ryan, an award recipient, and a parent at I.S. 318 on Walton Street in Williamsburg.

“This is why we put our kids in public schools,” said Valerie Keingstein, the president of the PTA at I.S. 318. “We have to champion and nurture our schools and the teachers who are so dedicated to them.”
