The Grand Street High School Campus in East Williamsburg will play host to the second annual Relay For Life – the North Brooklyn edition of the event organized by the American Cancer Society each year to raise cancer awareness as well as to honor survivors.
“It’s really nice to have it on the Grand Street Campus because having the track field for the celebration and having a big open space is critical to this event,” said Caylin Nieto, a specialist working at the Relay for Life as part of the American Cancer Society. “A big part of this is really about recognizing the survivors.”
At 1:45 p.m. on the day of the event all cancer survivors and caregivers are honored by walking a Survivor/Caregiver Lap around the track.
Teams of walkers are not just restricted to survivors and caregivers – students from District 14 are playing a major role in this year’s event by partaking in the relay – taking part in the walk – and raising awareness about the event.
It’s the first time District 14 schools have coordinated with the American Cancer Society to partake in the relay and both groups are now hoping that the Grand Street Campus can become a long-term home for North Brooklyn’s edition of Relay For Life.
“Many of our schools are very community oriented,” said Alicja Winnicki, the superintendent for District 14. “We believe in giving back to the community and we believe in supporting important causes that impact the community as well.”
A number of schools have already engaged in learning about the cause and effects of Cancer, and have since been participating in awareness-building and fundraising efforts throughout the district.
The Relay, which will take place at the end of May, is very much a culmination of all those efforts on all the groups’ parts. So far, 25 teams and 71 participants have already raised over $10,000 for the organization in honor of the event.
The festivities will continue well past midnight with an awards ceremony capping off the event.
