It was an afternoon of food, music, projects – and impeccable office spaces.
On Saturday afternoon, thousands of people showed up to the Kickstarter Block Party at the company’s Kent Street offices in Greenpoint. Dozens of booths were set up outside with demonstrations of various Kickstarter-funded projects – from vegan kimchi to printed ceramics – and music played by BBox Radio DJs set a playful mood to the event.
Throughout the afternoon, hundreds of people streamed in and out of the company’s impressive offices at the former Eberhard Pencil Factory, playing Kickstarter-funded card games on wooden benches and soaking-in art at a sizeable gallery on the ground floor. The enviable test kitchen – far bigger than most home kitchens –hosted a cookie painting demonstration with Sogoal Zolghadri, who started her own business with the help of Kickstarter at the age of 24.
“Everyone was incredibly enthusiastic about being there which just made for a very happy atmosphere,” Zolghadri said.
“58 Kent is the most beautiful office I’ve ever had the honor of seeing,” she added.
Dozens of people who signed up early took tours of the Kickstarter digs, which included a peek at the roof garden and open-air workspaces.
As the day wore on, some food vendors couldn’t quite keep up with demand – Snap Hot Dogs eventually ran out of dogs and Butter & Scotch sold out of their signature sweets.
While some people intentionally made the block party a part of their Saturday plans, others just happened to be out in the neighborhood, enjoying the spectacularly sunny day.
“We were just riding around, saw it and thought it was pretty cool,” said Williamsburg resident Scott Griffin who had no idea Kickstarter’s headquarters are located in North Brooklyn. “We were coming for the music.”
Several people currently looking for funding for new campaigns on Kickstarter were wandering around the event, passing out flyers and discussing their projects with people. Charlotte Kaufman of Pitchslap, who was there representing the Kickstarter project Buildies, said she appreciated the opportunity to meet the employees behind the crowd-funding company as well.
“There are all different types of campaigns – it’s nice they appreciate everyone equally,” she said. “It’s also nice to meet the Kickstarter staff and put a face to the website.”
