5-Boros Basketball, a Greenpoint-based non-profit that trains kids to play at Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball championships in the city and throughout the country, is holding its fourth annual fundraiser at the St. Stan’s American Legion Post this Saturday, May 3rd.
This year’s event features dinner, dancing, a cash bar, and a raffle with prizes that will be given out at the end of the evening.
These yearly fundraisers are critical to the successful running of the program. The non-profit is largely dependent on the support of the community to meet the costs of its program, which include renting out practice spaces, buying tickets for kids to travel outside of New York to play tournaments, and their living expenses while traveling.
“It’s always a struggle in terms of funding each year,” said Rick Atson, the founder of 5-Boros. “It’s a rough time for everybody in general, and it is harder to get funding because not everyone knows the kids well. But doing the fundraisers is really important for the successful day-to-day running of the program.”
The organization was launched four years ago by Atson who wanted to provide opportunities to underprivileged kids in the neighborhood, and to families who were unable to afford the high costs of enrolling children in afterschool activities and sports leagues.
5-Boros’ kids have enjoyed consistent success since the group was created. Students win numerous AAU tournaments each year, and this year so far they’ve already won three tournaments including defending the title they won at the Lake George tournament last year.
In addition to basketball, 5 Boros provides homework help and mentoring to its players.
Tickets for Saturday’s event are $30, and the group is encouraging community members to donate to the organization by visiting their website or at the event.
