The Brooklyn Chamber Brings a Taste of the Borough to Albany

They say, “Nobody makes anything in America anymore.” This week, Brooklyn’s best made their cases to the State Legislature that when it comes to manufacturing, technology and innovation, nobody does it better than the County of Kings.

Traveling with its largest-ever delegation, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the borough’s champion for local business, headed north to the State Capitol for its annual legislative trip, to showcase the successes of its members and discuss challenges facing local businesses with the State’s Legislators.

Highlighting the two day trip to Albany was Brooklyn Night, the Chamber’s annual celebration of local business. Themed “The Borough of Makers,” Brooklyn Night 2014 showcased the economic gains being made across Brooklyn in areas such as food manufacturing, furniture design, software development and other sectors in the innovation economy.

More than 400 legislators, officials and staff packed the event to sample some of Brooklyn’s finest and most iconic foods from manufacturers including Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Brine, Brooklyn Cupcake, Brooklyn Oenology, Brooklyn Seltzer Boys, Junior’s Restaurant, Kombucha Brooklyn, Liddabit Sweets, Nathan’s Famous, Peter Luger’s Steak Sauce, The Salty Road, Utz/Clem Snacks and Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Winery, which was selected to represent the borough’s food and beverage manufacturers in Albany.

“I must say, aside from legislating, Brooklyn Night is something I look forward to every session,” said Assemblyman Joe Lentol. “This year definitely went above and beyond my expectations – especially with so many new and growing businesses attending. The food was great and the company was even better. There truly is nothing more satisfying than showing my colleagues where the best of the best is in the state – Brooklyn!”

Along with providing samplings of some of Brooklyn’s finest delicacies, Brooklyn Night gave legislators, officials and staff the opportunity to speak directly with Chamber leaders and members about economic development in Brooklyn.

Under President and CEO Carol Scissura the Brooklyn Chamber has grown to more than 1,500 members and is leading the way in promoting the internationally recognized “Brooklyn brand” that is generating new jobs and economic opportunities in record numbers, with programs like Brooklyn Goes Global, Brooklyn Eats, Brooklyn Designs and Good Help.

“What a great opportunity to showcase the ‘Borough of Makers,’” Scissura said, “and we look forward to an even greater delegation next year!”
