City Council Leadership and Committee Chairs Announced

Pledging a more inclusive and democratic City Council, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Rules Committee Chairman Brad Lander announced the Council committee chairpersons and leadership this week.

“The leadership and committee chairs appointed show that this City Council will be reflective of New York’s diversity and values,” Mark-Viverito and Lander said in a joint statement. “These committees will be critical to examining and debating legislation, engaging the public and holding the administration accountable.”

Brooklyn received several important committee appointments, in addition to Landers’, including chairmanships of Land Use, which went to David Greenfield and Housing, which is now led by Jumaane Williams.

Locally, Councilmember Steve Levin will head up the Council’s General Welfare Committee. “As chair, I will be steadfast in ensuring that our city is improving the lives of those most in need and that we are looking out for every single child, adult, and senior citizen in New York,” Levin said.

Councilmember Antonio Reynoso was tapped to lead the Sanitation & Solid Waste Management Committee. “I am looking forward to ensuring that the Solid Waste Management Plan is realized and to assisting our city to move closer to trash equity and increased sustainability,” Reynoso said about the assignment.

Other Brooklyn appointments include Civil Rights (Darlene Mealy), Consumer Affairs (Rafael Espinal), Higher Education (Inez Barron), Immigration (Menchaca), Oversight & Investigations (Vincent Gentile), Recovery and Resiliency (Mark Treyger), Standards & Ethics (Alan Maisel), Women’s Issues (Laurie Cumbo) And Youth Services (Matthew Eugene).

Greenpoint’s neighbor to the north, Long Island City Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer was named Majority Leader.
