P.S. 31 elementary school students may be destined for the Great White Way in June 2014, thanks to winning a grant from Disney Musicals in the Schools. P.S. 31 was one of five schools selected from a pool of over 100 in the five boroughs. The new 18-week musical theatre program will launch this week at the school with the support of two professional Disney teaching artists, Kiara Danielle Brown and Amanda Grundy, who will guide the school’s teachers and administration in casting, directing, vocalizing, and choreographing a 30-minute Disney Production of Aladdin. The production will run at the school in late May. Those students participating will also perform with the other winning schools at a Broadway Share event in early June, with an exclusive musical/dance performance at The New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in Manhattan.
“We are very excited to receive this phenomenal theatre arts program from Disney,” said Principal Mary Scarlato. “It will be a great enrichment program for our fourth and fifth grade students interested in musical theatre, both on-stage and behind the scenes. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to support the arts in education.”
Approximately 100 students will have the opportunity to try-out for open auditions as well as work on props, settings, costumes, and technical support during this spring’s program. Auditions will begin January 23rd, and once the production is cast, students will commit to three hours a week of rehearsals and production work after school. P.S. 31 teachers, Sheri Sankner, Janet Zukowski, and Megan Jozefiak, will function as the production’s director, music director and choreographer.
Disney’s Aladdin Kids is a musical production based on the 1992 Disney film Aladdin. Alan Menken wrote the music, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. The music has been adapted and arranged, with additional lyrics by Bryan Louiselle. The book is by David Simpatico.
