Long Awaited Ice Skating Rink Coming to McCarren Next Month

A year after its anticipated debut, NYC Parks and the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA) announced, this week, that McCarren Rink will open November 15th. Built on the “beach” at McCarren Pool (the concrete section that juts into the middle of the pool), the ice skating rink will operate seven days a week through January, although OSA Executive Director Ed Janoff said his organization would consider extending the season if warranted by community demand.

The rink, the only one in North Brooklyn, will fulfill the wintertime programming envisioned during the more than $50 million restoration of McCarren Park Pool, which re-opened in the summer of 2012.

Measuring 7,200 square feet (sorry, too small for hockey), McCarren Rink will provide enough space for more than 300 skaters. It will feature local food vendors and a weekend holiday market, as well as workshops, demonstrations and classes in figure skating, hockey and curling organized by OSA. Skate rentals, sharpening and a pro shop will be available and visitors will have access to the pool lockers and other facilities already at the site.

“I was excited to hear about the prospects of a skating rink last winter, and was saddened to find out it wouldn’t be happening,” said Assemblyman Joe Lentol. “Any added amenity to North Brooklyn is without a doubt welcomed with open arms.”

OSA will foot the first year’s bill for the portable rink it contracted through Magic Ice U.S.A. The organization hopes to recoup its costs through revenues generated by admission fees, rentals and sales. Profits will be invested in North Brooklyn parks.

Funding from Councilmember Steve Levin will allow OSA to purchase its own rink, to be used next year and beyond.

Josh Cohen (Anella, Jimmy’s Diner) and Tyler Kord (No. 7 Sub) will collaborate on the food concession. Planned menu items include the Imperial Dog (lychee muchim and fried garlic), the Hacksaw Jim Duggan Dog (pulled pork, pickled jalapeños) and the Thanksgiving appropriate Happy Pilgrim – a hot pretzel melt with turkey, Swiss, sweet potato and cranberry relish.

The holiday market will be open weekends from Thanksgiving to Christmas and operated by Northside Media – producers of Northside Festival and Summerscreen.

“[McCarren Rink] is sure to be a premier winter destination and new holiday tradition for New Yorkers and visitors alike,” Janoff said. “The amenities we’ve developed to accompany the rink…are designed to offer a wide range of recreation and family fun.”

McCarren Rink will be open to the public from 11AM to 10PM seven days a week, from November 15th through January. Admission will be $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students and $4 for children, with group discounts and party packages available. Skate rentals will be available for $5.
