On Sunday, September 29th, hundreds of families spent a gorgeous afternoon at McGolrick Park enjoying a day of free activities including rides, music and food at the first annual “Greenpoint Day.”
The event was organized by Parties on Point Entertainment, who also sponsored, along with the Greenpoint Lions Club and Arthur Dybanowski of Arthur’s Funeral Home.
“Greenpoint Day” stemmed from community meetings organized by Friends of McGolrick Park’s Holly Fairall about recent vandalism that has plagued McGolrick Park. Its purpose was to draw people into the discussion about how to protect the park (more than 50 people attended the concurrent meeting), bring together old and new Greenpointers and to present various after school activities to the neighborhood’s teens.
Among the community group’s that presented at “Greenpoint Day” were the Greenpoint Leo’s, the 94th Precinct Explorers, Boys Scouts Troop 469 and 5 Boros basketball. The Greenpoint Monitor Museum, as always, was on hand to teach the community’s Civil War past to young and old alike.
Assemblyman Joe Lentol and Councilmember Steve Levin attended and supported as did 94th Precinct Captain James Ryan, who helped obtain all the necessary permits.
“It was great to see the community enjoying the beauty of the park and to see Greenpointers young and old meeting together in one place,” Lentol said. “Hopefully we can have more days like this in the near future.”
According to Parties on Point’s Rick Atson who spearheaded the event, organizing “Greenpoint Day” was a family affair. From day one, he said, mother and daughter Evelyn and Erica Matechak helped the effort along with Atson’s wife Tara. At the event, Tara, along with sons Derek and Travis and neighbors Carolina and Christopher Roberts served up the popcorn and cotton candy.
Atson was so pleased with the event, in fact, he’s already gearing up for the second annual “Greenpoint Day” to be held the final weekend in September 2014.
