On Sunday, January 20th, El Puente put on their 26th annual Three Kings show at the Grand Street campus. As in past years, the performance stressed the importance of preserving Latino culture and heritage, and being a good neighbor amid the enormous changes in the community.
“Pa’lante Place,” this year’s production, was based on the traditional Three Kings story, but updated for 2013. Original music, dance numbers, puppetry and videos were peppered throughout the story of a young Southside woman who thought she was better off leaving the traditions of her family in favor of fitting in in the gentrifying community. With the help of the Three Kings, she learns the importance of maintaining one’s heritage.
The show was written, produced and performed by El Puente Teaching Artists and its youth participants.
