Opportunity Knocks in Bed-Stuy

Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow (OBT), which provides academic and vocational training to low-income residents in Williamsburg and Bushwick is expanding its Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) to Bed-Stuy.

YAIP, which was initiated by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) and is funded by the Mayor’s Center for Economic Opportunity, gives job experience to disconnected young adults by providing them with 5 weeks of job training along with a 14-week paid internship. 90 Bed-Stuy youth will take part in the initial rollout, which will focus on enhancing their skills in customer service and business etiquette as well as their financial and computer literacy. Following the training period, they will earn up to $2,500 each, working in 14 week internships arranged by OBT, which has successfully operated this program in North Brooklyn since its inception in 2008.

Participants in YAIP Bed-Stuy will benefit from OBT’s network of partnerships with top business services firms, law offices, financial institutions and small businesses. Some of the internships will also provide leadership development courses and mentoring, allowing participants to become better, more responsible employees and leaders.

“We are excited to be expanding our reach and working with such motivated young people from Bed-Stuy,” said Randy Peers, executive director of OBT. “For many, this program represents their first entry into the professional workplace.”
