Rendering of the PS 84 Greenhouse Classroom

PS 84 Greenhouse Project Presents: Oido - An Experiment in Sound and Sculpture

This Saturday, December 15th, the community can catch a unique performance featuring two of Williamsburg’s most influential artists, Tunde Adebimpe, lead singer of TV on the Radio and internationally acclaimed sculptor and light artist Ivan Navarro. If that’s not enough to get people to give up a night of Christmas shopping, the idea that their contribution may help save the planet should.

Proceeds from the one-time only event will go to the PS 84 Greenhouse Project to help fund the over $1 million rooftop Hydroponic Classroom. With the help of parents, elected officials like Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Joe Lentol and Councilmember Diana Reyna, as well as local businesses and grants, the project is nearly funded. The Saturday night event should bring them significantly closer to their goal.

PS 84’s 1,500 sq ft Greenhouse Classroom will be the first of its kind in North Brooklyn. In keeping with the school’s ongoing initiative to assist students in thinking about the future, the Greenhouse will expose them to critical issues such as climate change and sustainable development while helping them acquire skill sets they will need for a new era. Moreover, the greenhouse will underscore the notion of the school as a community hub. Several community based organizations, such as El Puente, are already inquiring about joint programming at the space, which is scheduled to be completed in September 2013.

PS 84 parents, such as Heather Langsner believe that the project based learning project is necessary for the community. “It helps teach math, economics, business and the arts,” she said. “It will help kids think creatively about their future…It will teach [them] how to produce at current levels with fewer resources.”
