Williamsburg Prep offers a college prep curriculum to prepare students for life after high school. Students can take advanced science courses such as chemistry, physics, as well as AP classes in Biology, English Language, Literature, Spanish Language, US History, World History and Calculus. “In addition, our twelfth graders take a year-long government course which culminates with an extended research paper and oral defense before a committee of teachers,” explained Principal Michael Shadrick. Students can also take SAT prep courses and participate in Pace’s UPWARD BOUND program, where they take college courses, and receive career and financial aid advice. “We also have a college counselor on site to help students get into the schools they want,” said Parent Coordinator Kelly Ann Witkowski.
Williamsburg Prep offers overseas trips to its students, helping them develop an international education and learn more about other cultures. In years past, the young globetrotters have travelled to France, Italy, Greece, Ghana and Prague. For the freshman, there is a comprehensive orientation, including an overnight trip to Clearpool summer camp in New York. “[The freshmen] get to go on trips together and just get to know each other. It’s a great transition into high school and keeps them from getting nervous as they meet new people,” Witkowski explained.
“I think that we have become a neighborhood high school of choice,” said Shadrick. “The vast majority of our incoming students come from MS 318 and MS 577. We also receive students from MS 126, MS 50 and MS 382.” The school boasts exemplary educational standards, equipping students for the higher standards they will face at college. “I think we are becoming well known for our ratings on the school progress reports—an A in every category each year and we’ve been in the top 2% of high schools for the past 3 years. In addition, we are proud that over 90% of our students in the classes of 2011 and 2012 graduated on time.” Witkowski adds that parents should feel comfortable sending their children to Williamsburg Prep because, “this is a very safe school with rigorous academic standards.”
