Motto: “High expectations of today nurture successful citizens of tomorrow.”
In addition to the core curriculum, PS 34 offers visual arts, computer tech, and science enrichment. They also offer intensive music programs. Kindergartners take music classes with instruments and grades one through four take Music and Movement. Recorder programs are available to the third and fourth graders and the fifth graders can take Ballroom Dancing. School clubs include: Young Environmental Club (YEC), Composting Club and the Principal Book Club.
PS 34 also emphasizes character development and hosts National Character Counts Week for the community. During the event, children learn important social skills, such as fairness, trustworthiness and caring. The week culminates in a celebration where the children show the community how they’ve improved in each characteristic.
Besides Character Counts, PS 34 also hosts the community’s annual Flag Day celebration, which they have been doing since 1949. For this annual tradition, the students get decked out in red, white and blue and hoist flags, marching through the streets around the school to display their patriotism. At their yearly Art Parade, the kids don costumes to represent artists they studied that year under art teacher Lisa Summa. And for their Community Leader Read Aloud, various community leaders come to read to the students.
“We strive to teach the whole child by implementing rigorous curriculum in literacy and mathematics, supplemented by other programs and that helps the child grow,” said Parent Coordinator Ivette Sosa. “Parents should choose this school because we have a sense of what true community is. Our school has a family feel to it. There is not [just] one person, staff [member] or parent that lends a helping hand to make this school succeed. Parents should be proud to send their children to P.S. 34, which is also an historic landmark. Built in 1867, it’s the oldest primary school in Brooklyn. The school has a significant past, and is looking forward to a great future!”
