PS 19
Address: 325 South 3rd Street
Website: http://schools.nyc.gov/schoolportals/14/k019/default.htm
Although PS 19 has struggled in recent years, the staff is still passionate about teaching and isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. Many in the neighborhood are still loyal to the school and strongly protested a decision by the Department of Education to close it. However, the school is slated to be phased out by 2015 and accepts no new kindergartners. PS 414 will replace PS 19 in its current building. Despite this short future, the school still has much to offer to the community and its students. PS 19 may be facing a different future than expected, but it should not be forgotten. In addition to core curriculum, the Southside school also offers a number of extracurricular programs, including physical education, art, Read-At-Home and chorus. PS 19’s ballroom dancing program is extremely popular as well.
Events at PS 19 include City Harvest, and their highly popular Christmas show. Other events include Book Character Day and Scholastic Book Fair as well as its celebration of Dominican Independence Day.
“If the community sticks by us, we’ll stick by the community,” explained Magnet Site Director Patsy Tambakis. She added that PS 19 has a history of supporting the community. Tambakis also boasts that the school’s test scores have risen in the past year. “We offer the children a wonderful education.”
