JHS 126's Ericcson Leos Club

John Ericsson Middle School 126

Address: 424 Leonard Street

Mission: “Achieve, Trust, Integrity, Teamwork, Transparency”

In addition to the core curriculum, Middle School 126 offers after-school activities such as sports, cheerleading, marching band, Robotics, graphic design, chess club, a ballroom dancing team and a debate team. “Our music and arts programs are sure to be quick favorites of students as evidenced by our many talent shows and art shows,” said Principal Marcos Bausch.

The school has a very active Leo’s Club, which is the first of its kind in North Brooklyn. (The Leos Club is a division of The Greenpoint Lions Club.) The club participates in the Lions’ community activities like its “Toys for Tots” drive during the holidays. Bausch adds that 126 is also very involved in other ways in the neighborhood, holding community service events and green initiatives, such as recycling campaigns, throughout the year.

Bausch explained that he’s striving to bring back the success and prominence 126 once held in Greenpoint. Since he is from the community, he understands its unique needs, especially those of parents with school-age children. “We really want to align the school with the community,” he said. “There are so many interesting things happening in this building that we want people to know about.” He added that since 126 is small (about 350 students in total), the faculty and staff can give each student personalized attention as they prepare for high school. “Statistics show that small learning communities are crucial to developing strong fundamental skills,” he said. “Parents that choose this school will grow to love it because of our open door policy and our attentiveness to students’ and their parent’s needs.”
