Unlike other high school graduates, when students leave Automotive High School, they have already started down their career path. Automotive offers specialized programs in automotive applied sciences, engineering, law enforcement academy and business. In automotive applied sciences, students learn all phases of auto repair, receiving instruction from organizations such as NYC’s Fleet Services, mechanics and auto dealers. They also receive certification that will allow them to enter the auto industry. In business, students can study classes such as Accounting, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Business Law. Students who successfully complete three years in this line of study can go on to the Virtual Enterprise course and learn what it’s really like to be an entrepreneur by running their own virtual “businesses.” Automotive’s new law enforcement academy course allows students to learn the steps of the legal process and equips them for a number of career paths.

Automotive HS has two programs which host events throughout the year. The first program is the Organic Culinary Club, in which students and community members tend to a vegetable garden. The students then create dishes using ingredients they grew themselves, helping them learn about sustainable practices. Automotive’s second program is student government. “Members of our student government were instrumental in changing our lunch menus, beautifying our school, and creating school policy,” explained Principal Caterina Stanczuk.

Stanczuk wants to see Automotive increase its presence in Greenpoint. “Automotive is a very unique place because we are able to combine a rich history. We have been a high school here for eighty-three years, with the opportunity to create something new,” she explained. “Although our automotive program is successful and well regarded, we recognize the need to offer students something different. Our motto, “Experience teaches, but we fly by our own wings” encapsulates our mission, which is to create a home for each and every one of our students. The voices of our students are valued as are the voices of our parents and the members of our external community. Automotive has much to offer, you simply have to look under the hood!”
