Another Greenmarket for Williamsburg

Eating healthy in the neighborhood just got easier.

A new Greenmarket is set to join the Williamsburg Waterfront Greenmarket and McCarren Park Greenmarket next Thursday. Fresh local produce from three vendors, including an orchard and two vegetable farmers will soon be available on Broadway and Havemeyer Street.

“It takes a while to establish a brand new market, but we have a lot of shoppers already,” said Liz Carollo, Publicity Manager at Greenmarket. “What we’re trying to do now is make sure people go when the market opens at 9:00am to get all their shopping done for the week, and build up a customer base within five to ten blocks of these sites.”

Over 230 local producers within a 200 mile distance can be found at the Greenmarkets. A variety of fresh vegetables, meats, cheeses and wine can all be purchased at prices often cheaper than at the grocery store.

Carollo said the goal of the markets is to choose local produce over the larger produce companies.

“The Greenmarket is only centered on small family members,” said Carollo. “A lot of local vendors have seen their businesses grow over the years as a result of the exposure they get at the markets.”

Despite the rapid growth of the markets throughout the neighborhood, new ways to expand continue to be explored. They recently partnered with Brooklyn Flea to create Smorgasburg, a Saturday market with 20 Greenmarket farmers and 80 prepared food vendors operated by the Flea.

“We’re looking to find a new location within two blocks of [the Broadway and Havemeyer market],” said Carollo. “If we can get it, it will give us the opportunity to grow in that particular area.”

A number of local family farm products are new to the Williamsburg Waterfront Greenmarket this summer. Among them include cheeses from Consider Bardwell Farm (Rutland County, VT), vegan and baked goods from Body & Soul (New York County, NY), and farm fresh juices from Red Jacket Orchards (Ontario County, NY).

“When we open new markets, we make assignments based on what we think the neighborhood might be interested in,” said Carollo. “We try to get a nice variety of products that are all fresh and healthy.”

Smorgasburg, which includes a Greenmarket farmers market and a variety of prepared food vendors, takes place on Saturdays from 9:00 am-5:00 pm and Brooklyn Flea on Sundays from 10:00am-5:00pm, with both markets held between N. 6 and N. 7 Sts, just south of East River State Park. The Greenpoint/McCarren Park Greenmarket is held on Saturdays from 8:00am-3:00pm at Union Ave., between Driggs Ave. and N. 12 Street. The Williamsburg Greenmarket takes place on Thursdays from 8:00 am-4:00pm, and is located at the corner of Havemeyer Street and Broadway.
