Nonsense Makes Perfect Sense

The Nonsense NYC mailing list, which highlights independent art, music and theater in Brooklyn and New York City, celebrated its tenth year with a artistic blowout at Bushwick’s 3rd Ward last Saturday night.
The event which was organized by Jeff Stark, the creator of Nonsense NYC, featured dozens of musicians, writers, performers, curators and visual artists in a one night take-over of the enormous 3rd Ward space. A sold-out crowd decked out in their finest, and sometimes strangest attire hopped from room to room in to view the most innovative, unusual, and independent performances in New York City.
Each attendee was given two vouchers which could be exchange for tickets to the plethora of performances that filled out each of the various 3rd Ward studio spaces. Theater groups, bands, perfomers and makers utterly transformed each space into a variety of theaters, stages, sets, with all manner of themes, from saloon to photo studio to industrial wasteland. Stark’s vision with offering limited tickets to each event was to create unique and special performances and ensure that no one person could see everything there was to offer.
While guests waited for their shows to start, they could occupy themselves with a forward-looking art show in which Stark responded to the tenth anniversary of his list by asking artists to envision events that they would like to see happen in the next ten years. The dozens of posters revealed both the future of the artists who created them in the form of previews of upcoming work and optimistic visions of New York City’s greener, happier future.
With the shows complete and the attendees appropriately excited, guests were invited up to the second floor where an all-night dance party kept rumps shaking and drinks flowing in celebration of the past and future of New York’s independent art scene.
