Jason’s Picks: Oct. 12-Oct. 19

If your looking for early entries for “band that people will be talking about in 2010”, look no further than Georgiana Starlington. The band that consists of ex-member of the Black Lips play a galloping Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra sort of garage rock that already has plenty of people talking. The band should feel right at home playing at Don Pedros, as the Mexican restaurant/bar has become a sort of headquarters for not only the locals, but many out-of-towners who like the establishments gritty surroundings, and cheap drinks.
October 14th, Don Pedros, 90 Manhattan Ave. 9PM, Price TBA

It’s becoming more and more apparent that bands from the 90’s have staying power. That might be why Built to Spill is touring behind a great new album, and find therselves in Brooklyn as part of a two-night stand. The band have been critical darlings for years, and headlined Siren Fest this past summer, so expect to see a mix of old and new fans for this indie staple.
October 14th and 15th, Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North 6th, 35 dollars day of show

Locals The So So Glos have a Black Flag-like touring philosophy that keep them on the road nearly all the time. It’s been paying off, as this current tour with New Jersey punk poets Titus Andronicus, has been getting rave reviews from just about everybody who has witnessed the bands play together. The So So Glos channel The Clash, while Titus Andronicus play revved up garage rock that would make the patron saint of their home state, Bruce Springsteen, proud.
October 15th, Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 361 Metropolitan Ave. 12 dollars

Much loved British post-punk band The Raincoats playing in Williamsburg is sure to be one of the most talked about shows of the week. Kurt Cobain was a fan, and now many who were too young to witness the band in their original sloppy glory can see them in their own backyard. Opener Marnie Stern is always exciting to watch also.
October 16th, Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 361 Metropolitan Ave. 22 dollars

The kings of doom metal make their triumphant return to Brooklyn. The influential band Saint Vitus are on another reunion tour, this time that sees them playing Greenpoint. Except plenty of slow, head-banging action.
October 18th, Europa, 98 Meserole Ave. 20 dollars

The Horrors call to mind Nick Cave if Nick Cave was a character in a Dickens novel. Their songs sound something like a goth rock version of The Ramones, and the band have a huge fan in Nine Inch Nails leader, Trent Reznor. Opener Crocodiles is very much worth checking out as well.
October 16th, Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North 6th, 17 dollars

Suddenly everybody is buzzing about Brooklyn band Beach Waves, and for good reason. What started out as a bedroom hobby has yielded some of the most dazzling New Order sounding songs of the year. With a full band, who knows how great this band can be?
