For a laid back, Japanese food experience, make your way to Cherry Izakaya, the latest entrant to Williamsburg’s expanding, creative culinary scene.
“It has a nice casual vibe and I thought it would be nice to be a part in Brooklyn,” said Jonathan Morr, owner of Cherry Izakaya, which opened its doors on July 25. Morr partnered with Chris Johnson on the new restaurant.
The wooden interior of the restaurant includes benches lined up along the walls, and arched ceilings. The tables were lined with dishes like gyoza, a range of skewered meats, including pork belly, chicken meatball, and chicken scallion, and a variety of appetizers, such as stuffed shishito peppers, escargot donburi, and curried shrimp croquettes.
“We wanted to do something a bit more casual and we were both excited about having this in Williamsburg and the opportunity that it provided,” said Johnson, Director of Operations at the restaurant.
In September, the restaurant will launch brunch service with more traditional foods that have Japanese influence such as green tea pancakes and eggs benedict with a wasabi hollandaise sauce.
“People are truly acceptable about what food is and they appreciate it,” said Johnson.
Cherry Izakaya, 138 North Eighth St., opens Friday. It is open for dinner, Monday through Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to midnight, Thursday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. and on Sundays from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Brunch and delivery will start in September, with brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends.
