Top Chef Season Two winner Ilan Hall opened the Williamsburg outpost of his LA restaurant, The Gorbals, last week inside the Urban Outfitters concept store, Space Ninety 8 on North 6th Street.
“I wanted to give something to the neighborhood,” said Hall. “It’s a great neighborhood and the people here are nice and friendly.”
He decided to open his outpost in Williamsburg for people to try new meals such as The Bacon-Wrapped Matzo Balls and the Rabbit with Vinegar-Cured Cherries.
He wants people to eat meals that they haven’t eaten before.
“I like making people happy,” he said. “I want it to be tasty and really satisfying for people.”
Hall started his restaurant in Los Angeles serving traditional Jewish foods with elements of pork about five years ago.
His accomplishments caught Urban Outfitters’ attention.
In comparing dining styles between the two coastal cities, Hall said he felt the restaurant culture in L.A. is more nourishing while New York foodies are more insistent on what they want.
Located on the third-floor, the space also features an open-air rooftop bar.
On a recent afternoon, people were cooling off from the heat with drinks on the roof.
“I’m so glad to see the sunset and it’s really lovely up here,” Taji Okolo, 28, said. “It’s really nice and it’s a nice crowd.”
Okolo found The Gorbals rooftop bar more interesting and elegant compared to other rooftop locations. “It’s nice to have a place like this in Williamsburg,” she said.
People sat in the dining room with spaced plywood tables, and decorated with frayed beige ropes and besmeared subway pillars.
Steve Bryant, 27, was visiting the restaurant for the first time with his friend Caz Little, 32.
“I would recommend this place highly,” Bryant said. “There’s a roof and it’s hard to wrong with a rooftop.”
