New Tasting Room Offers the Latest in American Wines, Beers, and Cheeses

Staying true to Williamsburg DIY and “Growing Local,” character, Humboldt & Jackson, named for the intersection on which it’s located, opened its doors on July 11, adding yet another unique culinary experience to neighborhood’s growing list of cutting-edge restaurants.

The restaurant, essentially a tasting room, offers a wide variety of carefully curated wines, beers, meats, and cheeses.

And what’s more – they’re all crafted entirely in the States.

Humboldt & Jackson is the vision of Bill Reed, the man behind the southern-inspired tastes of Brooklyn Star on Lorimer Street.

“The vision was definitely to create a neighborhood American tasting room,” said Reed. “The best part is that I get to work with some amazing chefs, and we have a steady collection of wines from places like Arizona, Idaho, and Michigan, and I’m really excited to be able to show the potential of American farming.”

On this venture, Reed worked alongside his wife Pamela, and sommelier Sam Nahid.

A black and white board listing the day’s specials greets customers as they walk through the doors at the establishment. Stools are lined along a wood paneled bar that seat around 30 people. An American flag hangs proudly at the center of the room at the back of the restaurant.

The room can seat up to sixty people, but it also serves as a multi-purpose space for the restaurant – some of Reeds ideas include a pop-up chef space, an art gallery, and hosting cooking events.

Opening night featured a jazz performance – just a small taste of the neighborhood hangout Reed is envisioning.

Reed, who lives close to the restaurant, said the space was occupied for several years by an Italian catering hall, Cozy Royale, at which he happened to stop by one night before it closed, for a family style meal.

The owner was interested in moving her business, and offered to let Reed take over, and after months of careful planning, redesigning the space, and crafting a menu, Humboldt & Jackson was born.

“The response so far has been great,” said Reed. “We are not on a busy street and we want this to be a place that will be frequented by people living in the surrounding areas.”
