Booze App Brings the Liquor Store to Your Phone

For North Brooklyn Millenials, a new app is aiming to make purchasing alcoholic beverages even easier.

Minibar, launched in Manhattan in February, is making its way to Brooklyn. Modeled after Seamless, the online food delivery service app, Minibar users can get wine and booze orders delivered to their doorsteps in less than 60 minutes.

“Minibar will undoubtedly resonate with all New Yorkers of legal drinking age and simplify our hectic lives in this digital age” said Lindsey Andrews, co-founder and co-CEO of Minibar. “We look forward to shaking up the way liquor and wine is purchased and enjoyed.”

Much like Seamless and Grubhub, Minibar works with local vendors in each neighborhood to deliver products. Users enter their zip code to locate the closest store, and navigating a drop down menu, access the store’s inventory to place an order. Minibar employees then contact the store to get the order moving.

Upon arrival, deliverymen are required to check I.D. before handing over the order. Failure to produce I.D. results in a $20 charge on the customer’s credit card, and the return of the merchandise.

Andrews and Minibar co-creator Lara Crystal met at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania while studying for their M.B.A. degrees. The idea for the app, Crystal said, came from the realization that their key demographic, 21-45 year-olds needed an antidote to an increasingly fast-paced and hectic lifestyle.

Brooklyn was a natural course for expansion for the Minibar team – with so many Millenials now calling the borough home.

“We were surprised that wine and spirits couldn’t be ordered and delivered with the same ease as groceries,” said Crystal. “Minibar will change that. You just have to press a button to deliver.”

Over the next few months the Minibar team is looking to add customized features to the app to provide food and alcohol suggestions to users based on previous purchases. Crystal and Andrews hope to expand the reach of the app beyond the New York City area in the coming years – they even have their hopes set on making it available internationally some day.
