For Greenline editor and St. Nick’s Alliance Communications Manager, Greg Hanlon, football, and especially his New York Giants, are more than just a sport and a team, they are his passions.
On July 24th, Hanlon released his first eBook , ‘Our Town’: The Giants Who Won a Super Bowl and a Battle for New York about the 2011 New York Giants. In its first week out, it became the sixth highest selling football book on Amazon. Our Town tells the story of the Giants’ Super Bowl run through the individual life stories of each player.
Hanlon grew up a Giants fan and it was his lifelong dream to write a book about them. “There was always something kind of traditional about the Giants,” said Hanlon. “They marketed themselves as this kind of old school version of manliness that I was drawn to.”
He became particularly attached to the 1986 championship-winning Giants. Shaken by his parents’ divorce the following year, Hanlon became obsessed with the “Giants Among Men” video that highlighted those champions.
“After my folks got divorced I found myself kind of going to that video and going to the sort of myth in my mind of the ‘86 Giants, to represent something permanent and stable that I felt that I had lost,” explained Hanlon. The Giants were more than just a sports team to Hanlon; they became something emotionally significant and meaningful.
Each week of the 2011 season, Hanlon profiled a random player and tied his story to the story of that week’s game. He would meet with the players and their families to research their upbringings and twist them into a compelling drama.
“I wanted to show that they are more than slabs of meat on a football field,” said Hanlon.
The story of offensive lineman, Will Beatty, best evoked this idea. On the field he is portrayed as a monstrous, aggressive man who puts fear in the eyes of his opponents. But what most people don’t know is that as a child he had a speech impediment and used art to communicate. He is a great cook, an expert sewer, an artist and he even plays the piano.
By telling the true stories of these players, Hanlon shares with the world why football, for him, is more than just a sport.
