No. 7 Sub Comes to Greenpoint

Greenpointers hungering for a big sub no longer have to trek far to get their fix (with all the fixings)! No. 7 Sub, which achieved fame at Ace Hotel, opened in the neighborhood last Wednesday, January 18th.

No. 7 Sub owner Tyler Kord teamed up with business partner Ian Sugarman and designer Matthew Maddy to open the restaurant, which boasts a full bar and plenty of seating (neither of which are available at Ace Hotel). Kord looked at several other locations before choosing Greenpoint. “I didn’t want to go [somewhere else] in Brooklyn and serve Manhattanites,” he said. “The people who walk in here are actually from Greenpoint. There’s a great neighborhood feel here.”

A few good sandwich shops already exist in Greenpoint, but they’re not solely dedicated to the craft of sub making, nor do they offer a menu as eclectic as No. 7 Sub’s. For example, neighbors can now take a bite out of a pork and shrimp sausage sub, which comes with shishito peppers, roasted onions, grape jelly sauce and cilantro. The old favorites like corned beef brisket and bologna are also available. As for vegans and vegetarians, the shop has got you covered: They offer fried broccoli with marinara sauce, olives and banana peppers, and a cheese sandwich with spaghetti squash salad, honey roasted peanuts, and peach muchim. All subs are $9.

The fried broccoli sandwich (marinara sauce, olives, banana peppers) came into being because Kord now has access to a deep fryer and grill, which he didn’t have at Ace Hotel. Also new on the menu is the corned beef brisket, topped with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and special sauce. The beef is cured and braised in-house. “We’re able to diversify because of the big kitchen, which is lots of fun,” Kord said.

Aside from the roominess and well-equipped kitchen, Kord said he’s excited to become part of the community again. “I’ve got ties here. I used to live to here on Noble Street, and loved it.” Maddy is familiar with the neighborhood as well—he designed Saint Vitus on Manhattan Avenue and Anella on Franklin Street.

Maddy’s design exudes an urban, retro feel. There are bright red aluminum trashcans in the bathrooms and vintage coca-cola logos above the bar, which serves beer, wine and cocktails. “We put our own spin on cocktails,” Kord said. “We’ve got our take on a screwdriver made with fresh-squeezed Cara Cara oranges and clementines,” Kord added. “We like simple drinks and wacky sandwiches here!”

So if you’re in the mood for a wacky sandwich, stop by No. 7 Sub. Currently, they’re open from 5-11 p.m. weekly, but plan to extend their hours from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. every day starting next Wednesday. Call 718-389-7775 or visit their website at www.no7sub.com.
