Greatness of Graham Avenue

If you’re lucky enough to live in the super-creative neighborhood of Williamsburg, it’s hard to ignore the charming streets that showcase the neighborhood’s unique businesses. While baby strollers and new residents are sprouting up like weeds, stores with the old fashioned ‘mom and pop’ feel display stylish and flirty pieces that enhance personal style. And while Bedford Avenue is still regarded by many as Williamsburg’s be all, end all shopping district, Graham Avenue could very well be the highlight of your afternoon when shopping Williamsburg!

Being suckers for vintage and antique jewelry, our first stop was the ever eclectic Treehouse, owned and operated by Siri Wilson. Her melting pot of vintage clothing and accessories give you a difficult choice on what to buy since everything is surprisingly well priced! As the Treehouse of Brooklyn will actually be switching hands for 90 days, the new pop-up Few & Far Between, starring Lydia Austin and Irina Anisimova will make you feel right at home.

The new gals will be expanding the inventory of vintage apparel as well as adding additional vintage home goods including books, art and furniture. The roots of the pop-up will feature independent local designers- even some from the neighborhood! You can find the handy-work of Lux, Molly Rose Post, Species by the Thousands, Nick Lundeen, and Ingram Cecil. While trying to stick with the ‘eco-friendly vibe,’ they will also carry upcycled scarf necklaces by Luvo and bags by Josephine Heilpern. Don’t miss it!

Word on the street is that on Saturday, March 12th, you can come by to celebrate the store’s face lift with Lydia and Irina. Much fun, food and fabulous deals to be had! Few and Far Between is officially open for business Wednesday through Sundays from 1:00-8:00 pm daily. Connect with them on their blog at http://fewandfar.tumblr.com/ and their ever loving Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/fewandfar.
We took a sharp diagonal dart across the street and hit Orange Marmalade, an eclectic store which sets you back in a time warp with clothes dating all the way back to the 1930’s. We were greeted by the elegant Genevieve who so graciously educated us on the history of its kitschy-cool ,well curated collection. The 5 year old boutique brings you back in history with avant-garde fixtures and décor from eras of the past. The merchandise supports the true vintage collector with quality everyday wearability of vintage clothing at reasonable prices. She even played “She Wore Blue Velvet” by Bobby Vinton when I tried on a blue velvet swing coat. How’s that for ambiance? Get yourself on their “A” list by visiting their Etsy store 24 hours a day. Make sure to check out their Facebook page for sales info, information and super fun stuff they are doing.

After stopping at The Blue Stove (delish!) for a quick snack we crossed over Metropolitan Avenue and found Dolly G’s Vintage Store. Having been in the neighborhood for the past 3 years their customers keep coming back for more of their original, unique collection. Each piece is hand selected, laundered, pressed and steamed with care from around the world. The price point is anywhere from $35.00 to $100.00 with nothing over the $100.00 mark. Atmosphere is friendly and inviting with Giselle, owner and vintage wonder woman behind the counter. She is truly the expert offering fashion advice and style suggestions bringing her pieces to life for each customer. Local designers live here too, featuring Sure Shot Leatherworks and Light Star King.

All three of these stores offer completely different vibes and collections. You won’t want to miss hopping off the L train at Graham Avenue for some thrifty vintage shopping and a throw back into time.
