Go home. Get gifts. Get out. If this is your mantra this holiday season, you’re not alone. Since most of us are ready to get the hell out of dodge by this time of year, it’s refreshing to know that we will be residing in a nice environment where you aren’t slipping on the take out menus shoved under your door or tripping over your bike on the way out each day. While the key to happiness when dealing with family during holidays isn’t the same for everyone, it’s important that we know how to put our best foot forward when you’re stuck in the car with your siblings, you’ve gotta keep your grandma company for a hot minute or you’re unanimously elected to go pick up Uncle Harold who lives 45 minutes away. Again, the only difference now is that you have conveniently reverted back to your 9 year old self.
In the sacred territory of the suburbs it’s hard to understand how people survive without 20,000 restaurants, 50,000 night clubs and 40 museums that we are so lucky to have access to. But the truth is, people do it every day and get along just fine. City rankings today or ‘top places to live’ are now being judged by what there is to do for entertainment, art and cultural experiences available to citizens. In Lehman’s terms, my hometown is a LOT cooler now then when I was growing up there. With that being said, exploring the old stomping grounds isn’t so painful with yearly visits.
In this day and digital age most of us take advantage of not getting into the crowds and delighting in the aggravation of shopping. The internet has surely taken the joy out of all of that.
